Care and Cleaning
Silver Care
Most silver that is used in jewellery is sterling silver which contains 92.5% pure silver and the rest is made up of other metals, such as copper, to make the silver more durable and practical for use as jewellery.
Though this alloying makes sterling silver suitable for wear you must still take care with your silver jewellery. Silver is relatively soft and may scratch and bend easily so care should always be taken when wearing, putting on or taking off your jewellery.
If silver is left unworn it will tarnish, this is an oxidisation of the metal caused by the silver and other base metals in the alloy reacting with sulfur-containing gases in the air. The result is a greyish black coating of copper sulphide that will appears on the surface of your jewellery. This can easily be removed using an impregnated jewellery cloth or as silver dip solution, both of which can be purchased from us.
To get the best results from your silver jewellery we recommend a professional clean and polish. Silver (when polished) is the most reflective precious metal so it is definitely worth getting is buffed and polished when it started looking a bit dull.
Cubic Zirconia
Cubic Zirconia that is used in jewellery, or CZ as it is often referred too, is a manmade material and is the most affective and desirable diamond stimulant. A simulate is a natural or lab grown gem that is designed to look like another (usually more expensive) natural gemstone but which has a different chemical, optical and physical composition.
CZ have a high hardness rating and good toughness, they withstand heat well and are relatively unaffected by light and harsh chemicals. CZ’s do not endure the same kinds of treatments that natural diamonds do so they are usually fine to be steam and ultrasonic cleaned and are fine to be submerged in a silver dip, provided they are rinsed thoroughly afterwards.
