Care and Cleaning
Aquamarine is a blue variety of beryl which means it belongs to the same mineral family as emerald and morganite.
Its name is derived from Latin ‘mare aquam’ which literally means sea water because of its striking ocean blue hue.
Aquamarine is a relatively durable stone with a hardness rating of 7.5 to 8, but this means it may still be scratched by harder gemstones and everyday items so care should always be taken when wearing, storing, taking off or putting on your aquamarine jewellery.
To prolong the life of the stones we recommend putting on your jewellery after any makeup, hair products, lotions and perfumes.
Aquamarine can be sensitive to heat so we recommend storing your aquamarine jewellery in a relatively cool place, keep it out of direct sunlight and do not wear it if it will be exposed to excessive heat for a prolonged period of time.
Most aquamarines are fine to be ultrasonic and steam cleaned unless they have feathers (fractures) or liquid filled inclusions.
You can clean your aquamarine jewellery from home using a gem and jewellery dip or cloth which can be purchased from us, or with warm soapy water and a soft cloth.
A lot of aquamarines are heat treated to remove secondary yellow colourations. This is a common and stable (permanent) treatment that cannot be detected, so always assume aquamarines have been subjected to colour enhancing heat treatment unless otherwise stated.
