Care and Cleaning
When we think of garnets we usually envision an orangish red gemstone, such as a pyrope, but garnet is a gem group not a variety of gemstone. There are more than fourteen different gemstone varieties that belong to the garnet family and these come in a variety of different colours including pink, red, violet, orange, brown, yellow, green, black and colourless.
Pyrope’s are perhaps the most well known of the garnet family and is readily available on the market. The name pyrope comes from the Greek word 'fiery-eyed' as the finest pyropes have a glowing red colour.
Pyrope is a relatively hard gemstone but it may still scratch is it is worn without care or stored next to other harder gemstones jewellery.
Pyropes are relatively stable gems but sudden temperate changes can cause fractures.
To prolog the life of the stones we always recommend that your earrings are put in after any hair products, makeup or perfumes are applied.
Pyropes are not often treated, if they are it is usually a stable heat treatment to improve their colour.
Garnets are usually fine to be ultrasonic cleaned but steam cleaning may damage the stone due to the sudden increase in temperature. You can clean your garnet jewellery from home using a jewellery and gemstone cleaning bath that can be purchased from us or by using warm soapy water and a soft brush.
Diamond is the hardness known naturally occurring material, meaning it cannot be scratched by anything other than another diamond. For this reason diamond jewellery should be stored away from other diamond and softer gemstone set jewellery to avoid any damage.
Though diamond is the hardness known material it is by no means the toughest and can chip, fracture or cleave if hit with enough force so care should always be taken when wearing, removing or putting on your diamond jewellery.
Diamonds are oleophilic, meaning they are attracted to grease and oil. Any grease a diamond comes into contact with will stick to the surface of the stone making it appear dull. We always recommend that your diamond jewellery is put on after any makeup, hair products or perfumes have been applied. If your stones are starting to look dull you can clean your diamonds in warm soapy water or with a soft gem cloth, you can also use specialist cleaning products such as the Connoisseurs Diamond Dazzle Stick which is available to buy from us.
It is common for diamonds to be heat treated to improve their colour. This is a stable (permanent) treatment during everyday wear that cannot be undone. if any of our diamonds have received any kind of colour or clarity enhancing treatment it will be disclosed in the description.
Common clarity enhancing treatments include laser drilling and fracture filling. Of the two fracture filling is the least stable and we guarantee that none of our diamonds have been laser drilled or fracture filled.
Our diamonds are fine to be steam and ultrasonic cleaned and jewellery cleaning baths may also be used
