Care and Cleaning

Prasiolite is the gemological name given to green quartz, sometimes called ‘green amethyst’.

Prasiolite’s leek green colouration is rare in nature so most green quartz found on the open market is produced by heating violet amethyst or yellowish quartz from Brazil and Arizona to temperatures of around 500 degrees C.

This heat treatment is stable (permanent) under normal wear but prolonged exposure to sunlight will make the colour fade, so ensure that all of your quartz jewellery is stored away from sunlight and is removed before sunbathing.

Like most quartz, prasiolite has a hardness of 7 meaning it may be scratched by some everyday objects and harder gemstones, for this reason care should always be taken when wearing, storing, taking off or putting on your jewellery.

Prasiolite can be sensitive to sudden rises in temperature that can cause fractures within the stone. For this reason prasiolite jewellery should never be steam cleaned but ultrasonic cleaning is usually safe.

You can clean your quartz jewellery at home using a jewellery and gemstone dip or cloth which can be purchased from us, or with warm soapy water and a soft brush.
