Lemon Quartz

Lemon quartz is a trade name given to very light yellow shades of citrine. Most citrine is more of an orange to red colour but some stones can achive a light lemon hue which is a lovely alternative to darker orange citrine.

Care and Cleaning

Citrine is one of the most well known members of the quartz mineral family and is prized for its subtle light yellow to orange, and striking burnt orange to almost red colouration.

Natural citrine is very rare and isn’t usually available on the commercial gem market. 99% of citrine that we see in jewellery today is heat treated amethyst or smoky quartz. Brazilian amethyst turns light yellow at 470 degrees C and dark yellow to reddish brown at 550-560 degrees C.

Heat treatment in quartz is stable (permanent) during normal wear, is routinely done and is usually undetectable, so always assume that citrine has been heat treated unless proven otherwise.

Prolonged exposed to sunlight or strong artificial light can fade citrines colour, leaving the stone a pale yellow or even colourless. Be sure to store all of your quartz jewellery away from direct sunlight and bright LED lighting.

Citrine has a hardness of 7 meaning it may be scratched by some everyday objects and harder gemstones, for this reason care should always be taken when wearing, storing, taking off or putting on your jewellery.

To prolong the life of the stones we recommend putting on you amethyst jewellery after and make-up, hair products, lotions or perfumes.

Citrine is also sensitive to sudden rises in temperature and this can cause fractures within the stone. For this reason citrine jewellery should never be steam cleaned but ultrasonic cleaning is usually safe.

You can clean your quartz jewellery from home using a jewellery and gemstone dip or cloth which can be purchased from us, or with warm soapy water and a soft brush.
