White Gold

White gold is not found naturally, it is created by mixing natural yellow gold with silver coloured metals, such as silver and palladium to lighten the colour. Despite this, white gold alloys are still light yellow in colour and a layer of a silver coloured metal called rhodium is added over the top to give white gold its final finish.

Though rhodium is a durable metal this coating will eventually wear off exposing the light yellow coloured gold underneath and a new layer of rhodium will have to be applied. Please bare this in mind when decided to buy any white gold jewellery and note that rhodium coatings on rings will wear off quicker than on other types of jewellery due to the fact that your ring will rub against everyday items more so than pendants, earrings and bracelets.

We offer a free cleaning, polishing and rhodium re-plating service on all white gold jewellery that has been purchased from us to ensure your jewellery is always looking its best.

Pleochroism

Tanzanite is a pleochroic gem. This means it will look different colours or different shades of the same colour from different angles. This is an optical feature seen in all tanzanite and a cutter will cut a tanzanite in order to display its best saturation, hue and tone from all possible angles.

Care and Cleaning

Tanzanite is a relative newcomer to the coloured gemstone world, it was first discovered in 1962 on the surface and in the rivers of Tanzania. About five years later a prospector found a large deposit in the remote region of Merelani in Northern Tanzania and this area remains to this day the only known source of gem quality tanzanite.

The gems name comes from former Tiffany & Company president, Henry Platt, who named it after the county it comes from and for many years Tiffany & Co promoted tanzanite with a huge publicity campaign in 1968.

Tanzanite remains a very popular gemstone with customers from all over the world but the stones mining history is a turbulent one. Due to accessibility issues, Tanzanian government restrictions, political, social and economical issues as well as safety concerns, the supply of tanzanite fluctuates more than any other gemstone which means the price also fluctuates dramatically.

Tanzanite is a fairly delicate gem, with a hardness rating of 6 to 7. This means it may be scratched by harder gemstones and other everyday items. It may also fracture or chip if struck with a sudden sharp force. For these reasons we do not recommend that tanzanite jewellery be worn everyday but if it is to be worn everyday, in an engagement ring for example, extra care and maintenance will be required. Care should always be taken when storing, putting on or removing your jewellery.

To prolong the life of the stones we would always recommend putting on your tanzanite jewellery after any make-up, hair products or perfumes are applied.

Tanzanite is sensitive to sudden changes in heat. Sudden rises in temperature can cause fractures in the gem so for this reason tanzanite should never be steam or ultrasonic cleaned. You can clean your tanzanite jewellery from home using gem or jewellery cleaning cloths or dips which can be purchased from us or by using warm soapy water and a soft brush.

Tanzanite is almost always heat treated to improve its colour but this is a stable (permanent) treatment that cannot be reversed under normal wear.
