Care and Cleaning

Amethyst is perhaps the most well known member of the quartz family and is prized for its vivid purple colouration.

Amethyst has a hardness of 7 meaning it may be scratched by some everyday objects and harder gemstones, for this reason care should always be taken when wearing, storing, taking off or putting on your jewellery.

To prolong the life of the stones we recommend putting on you amethyst jewellery after and make-up, hair products, lotions or perfumes.

In some cases, if amethyst is exposed to sunlight or strong artificial light for prolonged periods of time the colour can fade leaving the stone a pale purpleish grey or even colourless. Be sure to store your amethyst jewellery away from direct sunlight and bright LED lighting.

Amethyst is also sensitive to sudden rises in temperature and this can cause fractures within the stone. For this reason amethyst jewellery should never be steam cleaned but ultrasonic cleaning is usually safe.

You can clean your amethyst jewellery from home using a jewellery and gemstone dip or cloth which can be purchased from us, or with warm soapy water and a soft brush.

Amethyst is not commonly treated unless to produce citrine or green quartz from pale amethyst.
