Care and Cleaning
Ruby is a highly durable gemstone with a high hardness rating which means it resist scratches very well and is ideal for everyday wear. It is also a very tough gem but that does not mean it is indestructible. Even a gem as hard and though as ruby may chip or fracture under sharp strong impacts so care should always be taken whilst wearing, putting on or removing your jewellery.
You should always store your ruby jewellery away from other coloured gemstones as ruby and sapphire may scratch gems with a lower hardness rating. (All gemstones apart from diamond and synthetic moissanite have a lower hardness rating than sapphire and ruby which both belong to the corundum mineral species)
To prolog the life of the stones we always recommend putting your jewellery on after any hair products, makeup, lotions or perfumes are applied.
Experts estimate that around 95% of all ruby on the market today has been heat treated to improve its apparent colour and sometimes its clarity. Heat treatment in corundum is stable (permanent) under normal and can often be undetectable so always assume a ruby has been heat treated unless proven otherwise.
Many rubies have natural fractures or surface reaching cavities or these may be created during heat treatment. To improve the stones clarity and durability it is common for surface reaching cavities in ruby to be filled with a transparent epoxy resin, lead-based glass or sometimes oil. These treatments can be easily detected by a trained gemologist but nevertheless they should always be disclosed by a retailer (treatments are disclosed below if applicable). If a ruby has been cavity or fractured filled it is not safe to put in an ultrasonic or steam cleaner as these cleaners may damage or remove the filling. They should also not be exposed to high temperatures or harsh chemicals during wear.
Diamond Care
Diamond is the hardness known naturally occurring material, meaning it cannot be scratched by anything other than another diamond. For this reason diamond jewellery should be stored away from other diamond and softer gemstone set jewellery to avoid any damage.
Though diamond is the hardness known material it is by no means the toughest and can chip, fracture or cleave if hit with enough force so care should always be taken when wearing, removing or putting on your diamond jewellery.
Diamonds are oleophilic, meaning they are attracted to grease and oil. Any grease a diamond comes into contact with will stick to the surface of the stone making it appear dull. We always recommend that your diamond jewellery is put on after any makeup, hair products or perfumes have been applied. If your stones are starting to look dull you can clean your diamonds in warm soapy water or with a soft gem cloth, you can also use specialist cleaning products such as the Connoisseurs Diamond Dazzle Stick which is available to buy from us.
It is common for diamonds to be heat treated to improve their colour. This is a stable (permanent) treatment during everyday wear that cannot be undone. if any of our diamonds have received any kind of colour or clarity enhancing treatment it will be disclosed in the description.
Common clarity enhancing treatments include laser drilling and fracture filling. Of the two fracture filling is the least stable and we guarantee that none of our diamonds have been laser drilled or fracture filled.
Our diamonds are fine to be steam and ultrasonic cleaned and jewellery cleaning baths may also be used
